Fear not the harsh winter is a series of paintings about my experience of darkness over the winter solstice, while on a residency with my mum in Glaziers Bay, Tasmania. These works observe the enveloping advance of night through interiors, exteriors, and in between spaces. Using expressive marks and moments of colour on a black ground, I show darkness as a space rich with possibility, forming a threshold between real and unreal, conversation and silence, disconnection and communion. The shifting silhouette of my mother has become the main character, moving from space to space, forming around her the keys to surviving a winter.
